<p class="mol-para-with-font">One should start the new year as one wishes to continue it, and these two Sydney locals made sure that 2015 will be a year of love.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">Demi Bryant, 22, and James Hundt, 28, celebrated the beginning of the New Year atop a high-rise overlooking the iconic Sydney Harbour display, which featured seven tonnes of fireworks.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">An estimated 1.6million people turned up to watch more than 10,000 aerial fireworks, 25,000 shooting comets and 100,000 pyrotechnic effects on show during this year’s New Year’s Eve display over Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.</p>

<div class="news"> Hundreds of umbrellas and tents began popping up on Sydney’s Blues Point early Wednesday morning as people settled in to wait for the symphonic light display, with huge queues forming overnight to secure a prominent view.</div>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">While much of the evening was dedicated to celebrating, floral tributes to Martin Place siege victims Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson were on display amid the evening’s fireworks.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">‘It is in memory of the two young and talented people that we lost because of that siege,’ said Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">‘We remember the trauma the hostages experienced, the bravery of the police and we remember the way Sydney responded as we expected – an inclusive, welcoming, multicultural community,’ he said.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">Sydney Harbour will be a beacon of celebration as Australia farewells another year, sending 2014 off with an extra round of fireworks. In what is believed to be a first, drones will be used to live stream the fireworks as they launch from the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and several barges in the water.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">In Rio De Janeiro, two hours behind London and Greenwich Mean Time, more than 1million people are expected to flock on Copacabana beach, where two dozen artists and DJs will perform on three stages. Tourists and locals routinely party until dawn on the beach, staying awake to watch the tropical sun rise for the first time in 2015.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">A massive fireworks display blasted from boats in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean will light the sky over the crowd, which traditionally dresses in all white, a Brazilian New Year tradition to bring purification and a peaceful year.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">Another tradition calls for partygoers to enter the sea up to their knees and jump over seven waves shortly after the New Year begins, for luck.</p>

<p class="imageCaption">Thousands of people have already started the festivities on Wednesday morning, streaming into Sydney’s CBD in anticipation of the evening’s spectacular fireworks</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">New Year’s Eve celebrations have already started across North America with New York’s traditional crystal ball already in place in Times Square.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">The Waterford crystal ball will drop at midnight, in a tradition being increasingly copied across the United States with twists celebrating local icons. Las Cruces, New Mexico, is spicing up New Year’s Eve with its first chili drop. In Miami, a 10-meter (35-foot) neon orange will light up, while Atlanta and Nashville, Tennessee, will drop a peach and a musical note, respectively.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">Flagstaff, Arizona, celebrates with a 2-meter (6-foot) pine cone that drops from a downtown hotel. Nearby Prescott drops a 2-meter (6-foot) spurred cowboy boot in a nod to its western culture.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">On Lake Erie in Port Clinton, Ohio, the community will carry on its tradition of dropping a 270 kilogram (600 pound) walleye made of wood and fiberglass.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font"> Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will ring in 2015 with a nod to its mining history, with a replica of a pasty – a baked pastry filled with meat and potatoes traditionally associated with Cornwall in the UK – to drop in Escanaba, one of the remote region’s largest cities. The meal was popular by miners who immigrated to Michigan decades ago.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">In Scotland celebrations have been underway since Tuesday night when Edinburgh kicked off the Hogmanay festival, which is the UK’s biggest outdoor winter music festival</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">Large crowds are expected at the world-famous street party which will see performances from Twin Atlantic, Twilight Sad, Eddi Reader and this year’s Mercury Prize-winners, the Edinburgh-based act Young Fathers.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">The concert in the gardens is being headlined by Lily Allen, who will be joined by special guests Bjorn Again and Soul II Soul. A midnight fireworks display will welcome in 2015, followed by the traditional mass rendition of Auld Lang Syne.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">In London fireworks will light up the sky above the South Bank at midnight and celebrations will carry on until 12:45am with a live DJ set.</p>

<p>Across the country lights were switched off and candles were lit, in churches and places of worship, public buildings and homes among other premises, including outside Number 10 Downing Street.</p>

<p>The lights were switched off at the Houses of Parliament, as part of the UK-wide “Lights Out” event recalling then-foreign secretary Sir Edward Grey’s remark on the eve of the outbreak of war: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince Harry were among the dignitaries to attend a twilight ceremony at the St Symphorien Military cemetery, near Mons, Belgium.</p>

<p>Dignitaries, including Prince William and Mr Cameron, laid loose flowers as a mark of respect at the ceremony – rather than wreaths or poppies, which became a tradition after the end of World War One.</p>

วันที่ 17 มีนาคม เป็นวันนักบุญแพทริค (Saint Patrick’s Day) วันสำคัญนี้มีถิ่นกำเนิดมาจากประเทศไอร์แลนด์ (Ireland)</p>
<p>สัญลักษณ์ของประเทศไอร์แลนด์คือใบชามร๊อค (Shamrock) หรือใบโคลเวอร์สามกลีบค่ะ หลายคนเชื่อว่าใ<span class="text_exposed_show">บชามร๊อคเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความโชคดี</p>
<p>St. Patrick คือใคร?<br />
แม้จะไม่มีประวัติที่ชัดเจนอย่างแท้จริงเกี่ยวกับ St. Patric แต่มีหลายๆหลักฐานที่สนับสนุนว่า St.Patric เกิดที่ Scotland หรือ อีกที่ ที่อาจเป็นไปได้ คือ Wales ประเทศ อังกฤษ เมื่อราวๆปี คริสตศักราช 370 มีชื่อเดิมว่า Maewyn Succat Calpurnius และ Conchessa พ่อแม่ของ Maewyn Succat เป็นคนพื้นเมืองเชื้อสายสวิต ที่อาศัยอยู่ใน ประเทศอังกฤษ</p>
<p>ในช่วงวัยรุ่น Maewyn ถูกลักพาตัวและส่งไปขายเป็น slavery ใน Ireland โดยถูกส่งตัวมารับใช้บาทหลวง ที่โบสถ์แห่งหนึ่ง ในช่วงเวลานั้นเอง Maewyn ได้เรียนรู้และเริ่มซึมซับเรื่องของศาสนา เค้าหลงไหลในการศึกษาศาสนา ในเวลานั้น Maewyn มีความตั้งใจว่า จะแล่นเรือออกไปนอก ไอร์แลนด์ หลังจากนั้นก็ได้ ล่องเรือไปตามชายฝั่งของ ไอร์แลนด์ เป็นระยะทางไกลถึง กว่า 100 ไมล์ จนมาถึงชายฝั่งของ ประเทศอังกฤษ</p>
<p>เมื่อมาถึง ประเทศอังกฤษแล้ว Maewyn ยังคงทำตามความตั้งใจของเขาต่อ ด้วยการ เผยแพร่ ปณิธานของเขา เค้าได้บอกเล่าเกี่ยวกับความฝันของเค้าเกี่ยวกับ ชายที่ชื่อ Victoricus ผู้ซึ่ง มาหาเค้าเมื่อตอนที่เค้ายังอยู่ที่ ไอร์แลนด์ พร้อมด้วยจดหมายฉบับหนึ่ง และนี่คือสิ่งที่ Maewyn เขียนไว้ในบันทึกของเค้า …</p>
<p>“เมื่อครั้งแรกที่ผมได้อ่านจดหมายฉบันนั้น ผมได้ยินเสียงร่ำไห้ในเวลาเดียวกัน เสียงนั้น ร้องว่า “เราทั้งสาม อยู่ตรงนี้ ได้โปรด เดินมาหาเราด้วย”</p>
<p>หลังจากนั้น Maewyn เดินทางไปเรื่อยๆ เพราะผู้คนใน ไอร์แลนด์ ยังไม่ค่อยยอมรับความเชื่อที่ว่านี้มากนัก เค้าเดินทางไปจนถึง ฝรั่งเศส และเได้บวชเป็นบาทหลวง จากนั้นจึงเปลี่ยนชื่อตัวเองเป็น Patrick (ความหมายใน ภาษาละติน แปลว่า บิดาของปวงชน) ตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา บาทหลวง Patrick ใช้ใบไม้ 3 ใบจากต้น แชมรอท (ต้นไม้ประจำชาติของไอร์แลนด์) เพื่อนำมาอธิบายคำสั่งสอน ให้กับชาวคริสเตียนถึงเรื่องส่วนประกอบ 3 องค์ คือ พระบิดา พระบุตรและ จิตวิญญาณ (ข้อมูลจาก <a href="http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yindii.com%2F&h=OAQHGYL9x&enc=AZOR7MEafTf2QJexacXpNGID6PdZKePkcUINwp2RWbj9rGMfdQVYpkvlgV3AzLbM_mmstd5NbYAKVWOseMF2fgoPpm6dM-k2QmDxTGG3e4GQTtK4ADcwZechklIjkBVev-t_2KWZkaT0GXr_nmwFTa0i&s=1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow nofollow">http://www.yindii.com/</a>)</p>
<p>ภายหลังจากการเสียชีวิตของ บาทหลวง Patrick ได้ถูกสถาปนา เป็น นักบุญ (โดยมีคำว่า Saint) นำหน้าเพื่อเป็นเกียรติืแก่เขา ดังนั้นเพื่อลำลึกถึง St.Patrick ผู้ซึ่งเป็นนักบวชสอนศาสนาชาว ไอร์แลนด์ ทุกๆวันที่ 17 มีนาคม ซึ่งเป็นวันครบรอบวันตายของ St.Patrick ในทุกๆปี จึงมีการจัดขบวนพาเหรด และ แต่งกายด้วยเสื้อผ้าสีเขียว เปรียบเสมือนตัวแทนของต้น แชมรอท นั่นเอง</span></span></p>

<p><span class="storyTop ">International Women’s Day, like any event that promotes positive discrimination, is accompanied by its fair share of negative remarks.</span></p>
<p>The earliest Women’s Days were held in the first decade of 20th century. This was before women had the vote, before women could legally terminate a pregnancy. In the UK, it was only ten years since a married woman could legally own her own property, rather than be property herself. Marie Curie was yet to become the first woman to win the Nobel Prize.</p>
<p>More than a century later and it’s tempting to see International Women’s Day as redundant, a celebratory event at best. Why do we need the event at all? The causes that triggered those first campaigns have been fought and won. Women in today’s society have all the equality they could ever need, right? Wrong.</p>
<p>International Women’s Day is still needed to motivate change, at home and abroad. Some of these statistics put into sharp relief just how far we still have to go.</p>
<p><strong>Violence</strong></p>
<p>Globally, about one in three women will be beaten or raped during their lifetime. About <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/the-violence-epidemic-half-of-women-in-britain-admit-they-have-been-physically-or-sexually-assaulted-according-to-shocking-new-figures-9169143.html">44 per cent of all UK women</a> have experienced either <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-26444655">physical or sexual violence</a> since they were 15-years-old. Britain ranks among the worst countries in Europe when it comes to women being violently abused.</p>
<p>On average, 30% of women who have been in a relationship report that they have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by their partner.</p>
<p>38 per cent of all murders of women worldwide are committed by a woman’s intimate partner.</p>
<p>A UN report said 99.3% of women and girls in Egypt had been subjected to sexual harassment.</p>
<p><strong>Female Genital Mutilation</strong></p>
<p>This is where girls have either all or part of their clitoris and inner and outer labia sliced off without anaesthesia, and sometimes have part of their vaginas sewn up too.</p>
<p>Over 130 million women living in the world today have undergone <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/feb/06/female-genital-mutilation-facts">Female Genital Mutilation.</a></p>
<p>There as as many as 24,000 girls are at risk of cutting in the UK.</p>
<p>In one Birmingham hospital as many as 40 to 50 women every month are treated after undergoing female genital mutilation.</p>
<p><strong>Marriage</strong></p>
<p>Around <a href="http://www.girlsnotbrides.org/">14 million girls</a>, some as young as eight years old, will be married in 2014.</p>
<p>An estimated 1.2m children are trafficked into slavery each year; 80 per cent are girls.</p>
<p>In 10 countries around the world women are legally bound to obey their husbands</p>
<p>Only 76 countries have legislation that specifically addresses domestic violence – and just 57 of them include sexual abuse.</p>
<p><strong>Working rights</strong></p>
<p>In the UK, the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/money/2013/nov/07/gender-pay-gap-official-figures-disparity">gender pay gap</a> stands at 15%, with women on average earning £5,000 less a year than their male colleagues. The disparity is even greater in part time jobs, going up to 35 per cent.</p>
<p>Globally only a 24 per cent of senior management roles are now filled by women.</p>
<p>The Equalities and Human Rights Commission estimates it will take 70 years at the current rate of progress to see an equal number of female and male directors of FTSE 100 companies.</p>
<p>This hurts everyone. The gender gap in certain industries is even more apparent and damaging. Zemach Getahun estimates that closing the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2014/mar/06/international-womens-day?CMP=twt_gu">gender gap</a> in agriculture could reduce the number of hungry people in the world by 12-17 per cent.</p>
<p>If the<a href="http://www.fawcettsociety.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Fawcett-The-changing-labour-market.pdf"> skills and qualifications of women</a> who are currently out of work in the UK were fully utilised, the UK could deliver economic benefits of £15 to £21 billion pounds per year – more than double the value of all our annual exports to China.</p>

<p><span class="translationEligibleUserMessage"><span class="userContent"> ผมเพิ่งได้อ่านบทความของ โธมัส ฟุลเลอร์ แห่ง อินเตอร์เนชั่นแนล นิวยอร์ก ไทมส์ เกี่ยวกับจุดยืนและทัศนะทางการเมืองของ หม่อมราชวงศ์มาลินี จักรพันธุ์ หรือ “คุณหญิงหมัด” ตามที่ใครต่อใครเรียกขาน ทำให้เกิดความคิดแตกแข<span class="text_exposed_show">นงออกไปหลายทิศทาง ประเด็นที่ฟุลเลอร์นำมาชี้คือ ความเป็นอำมาตย์ของคุณหญิงมาลินีฯ ที่ติดตัวมาตลอด จนถึงวัย ๖๖ ปีในขณะนี้ และจุดยืนที่เป็นบวกต่อขบวนประชาธิปไตย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นรัฐบาลเพื่อไทย อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี ดร.ทักษิณฯ และพลเมืองไทยโดยรวม ซึ่งดูจะขัดกันอยู่ในตัว และเรื่องความขัดแย้งทางการเมืองในครอบครัว ที่แผ่ซ่านไปทั่วสังคมไทยของทุกสี ถึงขั้นญาติพี่น้องและเพื่อนฝูงไม่พูดกันและหลายรายเกิดขัดแย้งกันจนครอบ ครัวร้าวฉานอย่างรุนแรง ซึ่งเป็นกรณีที่กำลังเกิดกับพี่น้องที่เป็นสุภาพสตรีล้วนของสกุล “จักรพันธุ์” เช่นเดียวกัน</p>
<p>ผมมีโอกาสได้รู้จักกับคุณหญิงมาลินีฯ เพราะท่านกรุณาให้โอกาสผมได้รู้จักกับท่าน รู้อยู่ครับว่าสตรีผู้นี้เป็นผู้ที่มีความเห็นอันเป็นอิสระ มีความกล้าหาญที่จะเป็นตัวของตัวเอง ไม่ว่าจะต้องสวนทางกับพลังอันหนักหน่วงของสังคมรอบกายขนาดไหนก็ตาม แต่ทัศนะและจุดยืนที่ประกาศชัด ไม่ใช่การพลั้งปากครั้งนี้ ก็ทำให้ผมประหลาดใจในตัวคุณหญิงไม่แพ้คนอื่น ใครมีโอกาสได้สนทนากับท่านหรือได้อ่านข้อเขียนประวัติศาสตร์ไทยที่ท่านเขียน ลงในหนังสือพิมพ์รายวันมาตลอดหลายปี จะรู้ว่า ท่านมีความภาคภูมิใจในประวัติศาสตร์บ้านเมือง โดยเฉพาะในประวัติศาสตร์ของพระบรมราชวงศ์อย่างเต็มที่ ไม่ใช่ลูกหลานราชนิกูลที่ตื้นเขินและปล่อยตัวให้ลมการเมืองพัดไปพัดมาได้ ง่ายๆ คำถามคือ ผู้ที่เป็นราชนิกูลแท้ และมีความหยิ่งในประวัติศาสตร์ของตนอย่างหม่อมราชวงศ์ท่านนี้ตัดสินใจมายืน อยู่กับฝ่ายประชาธิปไตยในวันนี้ได้อย่างไร</p>
<p>การวิเคราะห์จิตใจของปัจเจกบุคคลนั้นคงทำได้ยาก และผมก็ขาดคุณสมบัติทางวิชาการที่จะทำได้ แต่การวิพากษ์ในทางการเมืองและสังคมนั้นทำได้ ผมมองว่า หม่อมราชวงศ์มาลินีฯ เป็นราชนิกูลน้อยคนที่ปล่อยตัวเองให้มีปฏิสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมกับผู้คนกลุ่ม ต่างๆ อย่างแท้จริง ชีวิตมิได้ผูกอยู่กับอภิสิทธิ์และข้อยกเว้นต่างๆ มีความแปรปรวนในเศรษฐฐานะและทางสังคมเหมือนคนส่วนใหญ่ในสังคมไทย ทำให้หม่อมราชวงศ์มาลินีฯ เข้าใจและคิดได้อย่างที่คนส่วนใหญ่คิด ในขณะที่ราชนิกูลและที่สูงขึ้นไปจำนวนมากกำลังสับสนในจิตใจตัวเองจนใกล้จะ เกิดอาการจิตเภท วางตัวแปลกประหลาดและอ่อนไหวไปตามเสียงนินทา ข่าวลือ และจริตอันบิดเบี้ยวส่วนตัว และกำลังแยกตัวออกจากคนส่วนใหญ่ของสังคมโดยที่ผมคิดว่าเขาไม่รู้ตัวและไม่มี ใครกล้าเตือน ก็คนที่เคยนั่งรถไปไหนโดยเห็นแต่ถนนที่โล่งตลอดทาง ไม่มีอุปสรรคใดๆ ในชีวิต หันไปทางไหนก็แลเห็นแต่ใบหน้าและการโฆษณาที่สรรเสริญเยินยอตัวเองจนเกิน มนุษย์ จะให้เหลือสติปัญญาที่ไหนมาเข้าใจเพื่อนร่วมชาติ ท้ายที่สุดก็ต้องหันไปร่วมทุกข์ปลอมๆ อยู่กับคนปลอมๆ ที่มีผลประโยชน์ร่วมกันกับตัวเอง หรือถึงขั้นที่เห็นว่าหมาดีกว่าคน เพียงเพราะคบกับคนไม่เป็นเสียแล้ว</p>
<p>บิดาของหม่อมราชวงศ์มาลินีฯ ได้แก่ หม่อมเจ้าจักรพันธุ์เพ็ญศิริ จักรพันธุ์ ผู้ได้รับการเฉลิมพระนามขึ้นเป็นพระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าจักรพันธุ์เพ็ญศิริ พระองค์ชายจักรพันธุ์เป็นนักดนตรีมือเยี่ยมที่ถูกแก่กาลสมัย นั่นคือผลิตงานให้คนอื่นได้ดีกว่าตน ซึ่งเป็นการดำรงชีวิตที่จำเป็นในสังคมอันหลอกหลวง ผมไม่เคยมีโอกาสคุยเรื่องนี้กับสมาชิกของสายสกุลจักรพันธุ์ แต่คิดเอาเองว่า ความเข้าใจว่าอะไรจริงและอะไรเท็จ คงเป็นเหตุปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้ผู้คนในสายสกุลนี้เกิดความรักในความดี ความงาม และความจริง ถึงขั้นที่เกิดความกล้าหาญทางสังคมและฝ่าครอบแก้วของตนเองออกมาสื่อสารความ จริงนั้นในวันนี้ เรื่องนี้ นักประวัติศาสตร์ที่ไม่ได้จมศีรษะอยู่กับตำราแนวประเพณีเก่าๆ คงจะช่วยกันค้นคว้าและตีแผ่ความจริงออกมาในวันที่เมืองไทยเข้าสู่ภาวะ “น้ำลดตอผุด” กันต่อไป</p>
